Our Expertise in Offshore Wind
We made our first investment in offshore wind in 2014, becoming the first Canadian power producer to enter the European market. Today, we are amongst the top producers of offshore wind globally with three operating wind farms in Germany and the Netherlands producing 1.2 GW of generating capacity and 2.2 GW of new capacity in construction.
Through offshore wind generation, we harness strong, steady ocean winds to generate clean electricity through turbines anchored at sea. Power is transmitted to shore via subsea cables, supplying reliable energy close to demand centers. Its scale, consistency, and proximity to coastal cities make offshore wind a cornerstone of renewable energy, supporting global decarbonization efforts and energy security.
Benefits
- Benefit 1: Delivers clean energy at scale with zero emissions
- Benefit 2: Diversifies local energy supply, increasing energy efficiency and reliability
- Benefit 3: Enhances energy security by leveraging a domestic resource
- Benefit 4: Creates high-quality jobs and long-term investments in coastal communities.

Located in the Dutch North Sea, 85 km off Netherland’s coast, the 600 MW Gemini offshore wind project marked our first strategic investment in offshore wind. Completed in 2017 alongside Siemens and local partners, Gemini became one of the largest offshore wind projects in the world and stands as our largest operating facility in Europe. This project was the foundation of Northland’s expertise in offshore wind, opening the door for further growth in large-scale development throughout Europe, including Germany and Poland.
