Our Expertise in Energy Storage
We made our first significant investment in battery energy storage in 2022, joining the 250MW/1,000MWh Oneida Energy Storage project located in Haldimand County, Ontario, as majority owners. Northland oversaw the finalization of development, project financing, construction, and continues to oversee operations. In April of 2025, we delivered the project into commercial operations ahead of schedule, under budget, and with zero lost time incidents – a significant achievement for Northland and for Canada’s growing energy storage sector. This project acted as the blueprint for Canadian storage and laid the foundation for our continued investment and growth in the technology.
This year, we broke ground on our second battery storage project, the 80MW/160MWh Jurassic BESS project in Cypress County, Alberta, and we continue to explore new opportunities for storage in global markets.
Energy storage systems are capacity resources that work to store surplus energy from electricity grids during off-peak hours and release it during peak hours, enhancing system stability and reliability. Storage supports renewable energy integration, and helps strengthen electricity grids to meet growing energy and capacity needs.
